Beautiful and rare semi-precious gemstone Petrified Palm Wood or Palmoxylon from Indonesia.

Millions of years ago tree trunks were buried under several hundred yards of sediment. Over the course of time, the wood was replaced by microcrystalline quartz, largely chalcedony and jasper. During the replacement process by silica carried in underground waters, even the most minute details of the woody structure were preserved.

When a designer cabochon is cut perpendicular to the palm trunk, the tubes of the vascular structure often display as an array of "dots."

This is actually a pseudomorph-chalcedony gemstone replacing the wood. Therefore Petrified Palm Wood is actually a member of the chalcedony family with a hardness of 6.5 to 7. The designer cabochons have beautiful polka dot patterns. The largest single deposit of Petrified Wood is in Indonesia.

Metaphysical Properties of Petrified Wood: Petrified Wood is called the stone of patience.

Petrified Wood is an ideal stone for meditation because it will guide you in knowing what’s important and what’s not. by Diana Houston

If a tree were to fall in the woods, it would rot in the atmosphere and be eaten by bugs and such. However, if a tree falls and is protected from oxygen and the elements by ash or mud before it rots, and is subjected to mineralized water, it begins the process of petrification. Petrification is a long process by which every part of the trunk (leaves and branches typically will rot before petrification can happen) is replaced by minerals in the water that slowly seeps through. Those minerals settle into the cells of the trunk and by the time the cells decompose all that is left is the mineral mould of the cell. The replacement mould can be opal, silica, calcite or pyrite to name a few. The result of time and petrification is a very detailed model in stone, or fossil, of the tree right down to the cell and rings.

Petrified wood goes by many names; fossilized wood, opalized wood, agatized wood, or silicified wood (opal or agate replacement). Petrified wood is deceptively heavy. One might see some on the ground and pick it up thinking it is a neat piece of wood only to find it to be heavy rock. It looks very convincing! The colour of the petrified wood would depend upon what replaced it and the minerals in the soil. Some are rainbow-coloured and some look just like wood. Because of its beauty, it is used in jewellery, cut en cabochon. Petrified wood takes a very good polish and is very hard. The hardness is generally that of agate 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale.

Frequently Asked

Using Your Talisman

Absolutely! These pieces are designed for surfers, swimmers, and alike. They can be worn in the shower, and/or when swimming – and the colours will not fade. Our talismans have proven their durability in our rainforest home against the elements of sun, water, humidity, and heat.

Platypus Dreaming creations are handcrafted using the highest quality waxed strings on earth. They are designed to be long lasting and with the right care, they will maintain their original shape and colour for years to come. These talismans are water resistant and feel very organic when worn against the skin. All stones have different hardness levels so please be gentle and treat them with the right level of care. Each piece is designed with longevity in mind. We only use silver and/or stainless-steel beads which will never rust or loose colour.

We recommend a gentle rinse under fresh water – preferably rain or river water. Moonlight also works beautifully, as does smoke, i.e. sage, or Palo Santo. You can also use other crystals to energetically clear your talisman, such as an amethyst cluster. Some crystal talismans benefit from being cleaned regularly as they are carriers of energy. Others, such as moldavite, are independent beings and do not need cleansing. If you have any questions about the metaphysical aspects of the stones, please send us an email at info@platypusdreaming.com.au and we can answer your questions individually.

We have been travelling the world for 15+ years to source exotic and interesting gemstones. Wherever possible, we travel directly to the source, to develop a first-hand relationship with the people who take the stones from the Earth. This ensures we are familiar with the processes involved when extracting the stones from Earth; and that stones are ethically hand-collected with great respect and care.
